Objective:1. Discuss the relationship between chromatin, chromatid, chromosome, and DNA.
2. Identify the parts of a chromosome.
3. Correctly use the terms diploid and haploid when describing cells.
4. Discuss the purpose of mitosis.
5. Differentiate between the cell cycle and mitosis. Be able to discuss G1, S and G2 stages of the cell cycle.
6. Differentiate between the stages of mitosis, and be able to explain chromosome movement throughout the stages.
7. Discuss the results of mitosis, and be able to explain why daughter cells are identical to parent cells in mitosis. You should also be able to differentiate cytokinesis between plant and animal cells.
8. Differentiate between cell division and the G0 stage. Discuss when cells go into G0, and what cells remain in the G0 stage and why.
9. Discuss how cell division occurs in prokaryotes (binary fission)
10. Be able to discuss each checkpoint the cell cycle (G1, G2 and M) and discyss how failures of these checkpoints leads to cancer.
(Honors - be able to accurately describe how enzymes/proteins affect the checkpoints)
11. Discuss how damage to proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes lead to cancer. Discuss the cyclin-CDK complex as a control of the cell cycle (H)
12. Accurately and correctly manipulate a microscope to identify the stages of cell division in an onion root tip.
