Unit 1 - Homeostasis and Transport Practice Questions (key)
Unit 1 - Osmosis Practice Questions (Click here) (Note - key is embedded in the powerpoint)
- Design an experiment and explain how homeostasis (and homeostatic feedback) occurs in the human body.
- Discuss the basic components of the cell membrane, as well as why it forms the circular shape that it does in liquid environments.
- Define diffusion and explain how equilibrium occurs as the result of diffusion.
- Understand that diffusion applies to both liquids and gases.
- Understand the term concentration gradient - you should be able to predict which way molecules will move and explain why they move that way.
- Explain that some molecules can complete simple diffusion, while others need protein channels (facilitated diffusion)
- Understand that osmosis is a specific form of passive diffusion related to the movement of water.
- Explain the terms hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic in terms of osmosis.
- Compare and Contrast Active and Passive Transport (what is needed, what molecules can and cannot move through the membrane, etc.)
- Discuss ion channels, and why these specific channels are needed.
- Define ATP and discuss what it is used for in active transport.
- Discuss Endocytosis and exocytosis in terms of active transport (bulk transport)
